EUFAULA, Ala. — A 12-year-old boy was found dead after vanishing at a lake along the Georgia-Alabama line after a school bag was found floating in the water.
The Eufaula Police Department responded to reports of the book bag floating near a boat ramp dock in Walter F. George Lake (also known as Lake Eufala) around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Crews searched both the water and the land surrounding the lake extensively and found the child’s body about two hours later in Barbour Creek in Alabama.
Family members identified him as Zyrion Harris, according to WTVM. He was last seen walking towards the lake after getting off the school bus.
Investigators are still working to determine what happened after that.

Eufaula police said that the child was a middle-school student in the area and that counselors would be made available at the school.

“We do not know many details at this point, but we do know we lost a precious middle-school student,” police said. “We need community support of thoughts and prayers for our students and staff members.”
