Victim’s family wants changes after 6 people hit, killed on same stretch of road in last 4 years

NORCROSS, Ga. — The family of a mother killed in a hit-and-run incident is now asking for changes to be made on the road where she died.

Since 2018, six people have died along the same stretch of Singleton Road in Norcross. Channel 2′s Matt Johnson talked to the family of a woman who was hit and killed earlier this month. They said there aren’t enough safe ways to cross the street.

Angela Sherrell, 45, left behind two kids who were forced to live on without her after her death on August 2. She was hit around 10:30 at night on Singleton Road and Harbins Ridge Drive as she walked to a friend’s house.

“It’s hard knowing my mom will not be there for my graduation, birthdays, Christmases,” said Analyssa Garcia, Sherrell’s 16-year-old daughter. “It’s really hard.”

The man accused of killing her, Angel Turcio-Garcia, was arrested on Monday on vehicular homicide and hit and run charges. Gwinnett Police said he also changed his windshield after the crash to hide evidence.

”I’m just glad my mom gets her justice that she deserves,” said Garcia.

But Garcia and Sherrell’s family wants more than justice, they want changes on the road where she died.

“Something just to make this road not so dangerous,” she said.

Sherrell is the sixth person to die from a crash on the road in the past four years, and the second pedestrian since last December, according to data provided by Gwinnett County Police from an open records request.

Her family knows she was outside of a crosswalk, but believes there aren’t enough options at night to safely cross. They told Channel 2 Action News they’d also like to see better lighting for pedestrians at night.

“Put more crosswalks,” said Vanessa Diego, her niece. “Because it’s not only just on my aunt, but for all the other families that’s has lost a loved one to this road.”

Gwinnett County officials tell Channel 2 Action News there is an active traffic management project in the works for the area that could improve safety. Additionally, county leaders said sidewalks were recently added at Pirkle Road and Harbins Road.

Sherrell’s family is hoping no one else goes through what happened to them.

“Our whole life had just switched around over one night,” said Garcia.
