ATLANTA — Walmart is raising pay for more than 950 truck drivers in Georgia.
The company announced Thursday that their fleet of private drivers can now make up to $110,000 in their first year with the company, with the potential for that salary to increase based on factors like tenure and location. The previous average salary was $87,500 for drivers.

The company is also launching a new fleet development program to train the next generation of drivers through a 12-week program. The new private fleet development program enables supply chain associates in select locations to earn their CDL for free and become professional Walmart drivers.
“Walmart has the one of the largest and safest private fleets in the trucking industry and Walmart truck driver jobs are considered among the best in the industry, where many drivers choose to remain throughout their careers,” the company said in a statement.

The moves announced Thursday come as the pandemic has made trucker shortages more severe as demand to move freight reaches historic highs. The American Trucking Associations, a large industry trade group, estimates that the nation is short about 80,000 drivers.
