WARNING: Search on for alligator spotted in local reservoir

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — People visiting a reservoir in Coweta County will notice an unexpected warning. Signs are up to alert people of an alligator sighting.

The Coweta County Water and Sewerage Authority says an authority employee recently spotted the gator in the B.T. Brown reservoir.

The reservoir covers 300+ acres, according to Coweta County. It is primarily used to produce drinking water but is also an attraction for people who want to enjoy the outdoors.

A state certified gator trapper believes the alligator is between six to eight feet long.

Alligators are rare, but not unheard of in this part of Georgia.

“I caught a gator out of Lake Lanier. How much bigger is Laker Lanier than this reservoir. So, it’s not that we can’t do it. The alligator I caught in Lake Lanier had a habit. A zone he was patrolling and living in. So I was able to pinpoint that area. It took several hours, but we caught it,” said trapper Jason Clark.

Clark says if you see the alligator, give it plenty of room and do not feed it.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says alligators in Georgia typically live along and south of the fall line which roughly runs through the cities of Columbus, Macon, and Augusta.
