Wheeler High School boys basketball team to compete in national tournament

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Basketball players at a Cobb County high school will get to play in a national championship tournament in New York at Madison Square Garden.

Players from the Wheeler High School boys basketball team were upset when they initially learned they would not be allowed to play in a national tournament in New York.

Winning the state title gave the team a shot to play in a privately run national championship tournament in New York, but the Georgia High School Association wouldn't allow the team to compete on a national stage.

The state organization told the high school team their bylaws say the season ends when the state tournament ends.

Former player Muhammad Abdur-Rahim is now a lawyer, and he says the GHSA rules are old and outdated.

"The benefit is being on a national stage, and one mroe shot at a college scholarship if its simply for that," said Abdur-Rahim.

The state organization eventually bowed to pressure from state lawmakers and citizens on social media who called for the GHSA to let the boys play.
