Good news! Wife of Georgia principal making progress in fight against coronavirus

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — The wife of a metro Atlanta school principal who was fighting for her life due to the coronavirus is making progress.

April and Kyle Abernathy were diagnosed with coronavirus last week. Kyle Abernathy is the principal of Cave Spring Elementary School in Floyd County.

He improved and was discharged, but April Abernathy remained in critical condition.

Her sister, Amanda Hebert, told Channel 2′s Tom Regan on Sunday night that Abernathy was taken off a ventilator last night.

“She is still on oxygen and a feeding tube, but is awake!” Hebert told Regan.

Kyle Abernathy is recovering at home under quarantine.

Hebert said the couple attended services earlier this month at the Church at Liberty Square in Cartersville and got sick within days.

Hebert told Regan they were shocked since the couple had no underlying medical conditions and are both only 36 years old.

"My sister started running a fever and she developed a cough," Hebert said. "The next day, on Monday, she went to the ER."

The pastor and county health officials said other members of the church have also tested positive for the coronavirus.

One parishioner died. Elizabeth Wells, 65, a grandmother of four from Rome, died last week.

People who attended services at the church during the last few weeks have been told to self-isolate and monitor symptoms for two weeks. The church is closed.

"From what we have heard, there are several members of the church and the choir who are being tested," Hebert said.

"We are not sure of the numbers right now."

Hebert has set up a GoFundMe page to help her sister and brother-in-law with expenses. They have two young children.

“We are just trying to get some support in that way to help them out,” Hebert said.
