Witness describes Norcross spa murder-suicide

NORCROSS, Ga.,None — For the first time, a witness described what it was like inside a Gwinnett County health spa moments after a local family was gunned down.

"One person (dead) is one thing, having five people is sad," Robert Pwon told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh. He was a regular customer at the Su Jung Health Sauna on Buford Highway in Norcross. He said it was his place of respite, but that all changed in an instant Tuesday night.

"I heard somebody getting into the door," Pwon said.

Pwon said he was beginning a massage when he heard a commotion.

"The therapist kind of screamed because he saw Mr.  Kim bleeding and he was almost literally dying," Pwon said.

Pwon said one of the owners, 55-year-old Tae Yol Kim, was on the floor outside his room. Pwon called 911 then headed to the front of the building where he made the next shocking discovery.

"Bodies were lying down on the floor, that's when I discovered that terrible tragic incident that had occurred," Pwon said.

Norcross Police said it was a murder-suicide, possibly the result of a family feud.

The victims were all owners of the spa and well respected members of the Korean-American community.

Byung Kang, 65, and his wife, Kum Hi Song, 61, co-owned the spa with her sister Kum Sook Kim, 57, her husband, Mr. Kim, and Song's brother, Jeong Soo Paek, 59, the apparent shooter.

The death of the family has rocked the community and dominated Korean news.

On Thursday, mourners coming to pay their respects and left flowers at the business' front door.

"The whole family went to Heaven and God bless," said family friend Suny Kim. "I'm just really sad. I couldn't sleep last night."

"It's a horrifying story that a whole family has to die because of whatever dispute that they may have." Pwon said. "There's nothing I could do to prevent it or help and it's terrible."

On Thursday, Channel 2 found the family was back at the Su Jung spa as a crews began cleaning up after the tragedy.

Two separate funerals are set for this weekend.

Several family friends said the business had been in financial trouble for several years, but police have not revealed a motive for the shooting.
