Witnesses describe moment Dunwoody apartment building exploded in front of them

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Witnesses are describing the terrifying moments they heard an explosion at a Dunwoody apartment complex.

The explosion happened at the Arrive Apartments off Asbury Square. DeKalb County Fire officials said at least four people were taken to the hospital. Two people who were unaccounted for are now safe.

Channel 2′s Elizabeth Rawlins spoke with a man who ran to the rescue after he realized what happened.

“One person was hooked in a tree. They were pushed into a tree because of the force. One person fell to the pavement,” Kirk Malcom said.

When DeKalb County investigators arrived on scene, only two people needed medical attention, but they continued to search the area to make sure everyone was accounted for.

Investigators said that at least 15 to 20 units were impacted. Three apartments were unstable but firefighters were able to get inside them just before 6 p.m.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but there were reports of a potential gas leak.

“You could hear it blow up and then you heard the crash. It sounded like something exploded,” Eboni Thorton told Rawlins. “About 5-10 minutes later, you could smell gas.”

Atlanta Gas has been on the scene assisting emergency responders and gas is shut off. Crews are still working to determine how many people are impacted and displaced.

Channel 2 Action News received the following statement from Atlanta Gas Light:

“This afternoon, Atlanta Gas Light joined first responders to assist in investigating an incident near the 2000 block of Asbury Square in Dunwoody. We immediately began coordinating an emergency response with local first responders. At present, natural gas has been turned off to the locations directly impacted by the incident, and there are no additional service outages. Atlanta Gas Light crews remain on site assisting first responders. The safety of our customers and employees is Atlanta Gas Light’s No. 1 value, and our thoughts remain with those impacted.”
