ATHENS, Ga. — The Athens-Clarke County Police Department says a woman has been charged with homicide after she hit and killed a University of Georgia student.
Knox Whiten, 21, was hit on the Athens Loop near the Chase Street exit on March 21.
Virkerria Steward, 28, has been charged with first degree homicide by vehicle, hit a nd run resulting in serious injury or death, false report of a crime and driving on a suspended license.

Police said that shortly after Whiten was killed, a Chevy Cruze was set on fire in Jackson County. Officers were able to determine the vehicle was related to the hit and run.
Police said Steward had reported the vehicle as stolen, but officers were able to determine that it was not stolen and she was driving when Whiten was killed. Police have not said who set the car on fire.
Steward has been in the Clayton County jail on unrelated charges since later in the day Whiten was killed.
