Woman found dead in wrecked SUV in Georgia a month after she vanished

AMERICUS, Ga. — Authorities in southwest Georgia said a woman's body was found in her wrecked car over a month since she went missing.

Rosa Welch, 30, was reported missing July 6 near Americus in Sumter County. Searchers were conducted by land and by air, but nothing turned up.

On Monday, a person driving by noticed a reflection from Welch's Jeep Cherokee east of Amercius and called deputies, WALB reported. Sumter County Chief Deputy Eric Bryant said the vehicle was found more than 100 feet off the road.

Deputies told the station they believe she ran off the road and hit a tree the day she was reported missing.

“I was still trying to have faith that she was alive,” said Tiffany Hogg, Rosa Welch’s sister.

Foul play is not suspected, according to WALB. An autopsy has been completed on Welch's body, said Sumter County Coroner Greg Hancock, but toxicology results have not come back.

Bryant told WALD there is no reason to believe Welch was driving under the influence.
