ATLANTA — A woman told Channel 2 Action News apartment workers emptied her apartment unit in northwest Atlanta and threw her belongings into a dumpster.

Jazmyn Barnes broke down in tears when she came home to her apartment Tuesday and found everything she owned outside, some of it in the trash.

"I can't even get in here to get my stuff," Barnes said in a video showing her items laid with trash inside the dumpster.

Barnes said it all happened on her 2-year-old son's birthday. She lives at the Rolling Bends Apartments, a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development property.

"They threw away medicine for my child," Barnes said. "His shot records, personal items were thrown in the trash and we came to dig them out."

She said she didn't know what to think until she said a manager at the apartment complex filled her in.

"They told me that accidents happen, it was a mistake, it was a simple mistake, it was supposed to be the home up under me," Barnes said.

She sent Channel 2 Action News video of her empty refrigerator once she got back inside.

She said staff gave her a letter explaining she'd get $55 to replace the food that was thrown out.

"That's some apology," Barnes said. "Fifty dollars for food is not enough. That was in my fridge already."

Channel 2's Matt Johnson tried to contact a manager Tuesday evening, but he wasn't able to reach anyone before our report aired on Channel 2 Action News.

Barnes said she has had family come over to help move some of her things back into the apartment, but she said she hasn't been able to find everything.

Now, she wants a better explanation about how this could happen.

"I hope that I get some justice. I hope I get my items replaced that (are) gone," Barnes said.

She said she is now considering leaving the property, unsure if it may happen again.

We will let you know when we hear back from management.
