LOS ANGELES — Pro football Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin is waiting for the results of a throat biopsy after experiencing trouble with his voice for almost two months.
Irvin announced the news on social media Tuesday, asking for prayers for himself and his family.
The sportscaster, 53, said he spent the past two days at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center undergoing testing.
"This past football season after the Dallas Cowboys beat the Saints, I was so elated and hyped I lost my voice and the problem persisted for almost 2 months," Irvin said in a detailed Instagram post.
He said he visited some of the best throat doctors, who recommended further testing.
Irvin has a history of throat cancer in his family. His father died from the disease when he was just 51.
The former athlete said he was fearless as a football player and that served him well on and off the field, but he said he’s now “terrified.”
It’s unclear when Irvin might get the biopsy results back.
“I am asking all who will. Could you please send up a prayer to help my family and I deal with whatever the results may be?” he said in the post.
Irvin spent his 12 years in the NFL from 1988 to 1999 with the Dallas Cowboys. He’s been a sports analyst with the NFL since 2009.
