LAKE CHARLES, La. — A driver and his passenger died trying to cross an open drawbridge early Friday morning, police said.
The Black Bayou Bridge was closed to traffic as a boat passed beneath it around 2 a.m., investigators said.
Rather than wait, the passenger lifted the gate arm, the driver moved the car onto the ramp and they tried to jump across the bridge but instead sank into the water, according to investigators.
The driver was trapped in the car and the passenger was found outside of the vehicle, investigators said. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their names have not been released. Toxicology reports are pending.
