So how did Dec. 12 become Gingerbread House Day? The national day calendar says a monk brought gingerbread to Europe about 1,000 years ago and it was often used in religious ceremonies.
Rumor has it researchers believe the story of Hansel and Gretel inspired the idea of making it into houses.
Now, crafting these homes made of molasses, sugar and honey is a holiday tradition.
