Study shows not limiting red meat consumption could be detrimental to brain health

U.S. — A new study suggests not limiting the amount of red meat you eat could pose consequences for your brain.

Studies conducted on more that 133,000 people over the course of 40 years found those who ate at least one quarter of a serving of processed red meats daily had a 13-percent higher chance of developing dementia, CNN reports.

That is compared to those who consumed minimal amounts. A serving of red meat is totals three ounces, which equals about two slices of bacon or a hot dog.

So how do you protect your brain health?

Authors of the study found that replacing red meat with plant-based protein sources could be one solution that could lead to a 19 percent lower risk of dementia.

Just as a point of reference, the study was observational, meaning there is no direct link between eating processed red meat leading to a dementia diagnosis.

Researchers were only able to show there was an association between the two, CNN reports.
