David Perdue files paperwork for another possible run at the Senate in 2022

ATLANTA — Former Sen. David Perdue has filed the paperwork to explore another run at the Senate in 2022, this time to go up against current Sen. Raphael Warnock.

Perdue was defeated by Sen. Jon Ossoff in January runoff. Perdue confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that he is considering another run.

Warnock won his race against former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed to the seat by Gov. Brian Kemp following former Sen. Johnny Isakson’s resignation over health issues.

Warnock only has three years in his current term to finish out the seat vacated by Isakson. That is the seat that Perdue is considering to run for.

A senior Perdue adviser characterized the filing to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a necessary legal step but added that the former senator is “leaning heavily toward” running again.

If Perdue runs, the adviser said, he will decide by March 1, put together a campaign team and make an announcement in April.

Perdue was a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump and arguably one of his biggest allies throughout Trump’s presidency. Perdue was defeated after just one term as senator.

Voters elected Perdue to the Senate in the 2014 election. He ran for election after the retirement of Republican Saxby Chambliss. He’s first cousin to former Georgia governor and former U.S. agriculture secretary, Sonny Perdue.

Before entering politics, Perdue served as the CEO of Dollar General and Reebok as well as a senior manager at companies, such as Haggar Clothing and Sara Lee.
