ATLANTA — An Atlanta restaurant has failed its health inspection for the second time in less than a year.

Channel 2’s Carol Sbarge went to Bamboo Luau’s restaurant in northeast Atlanta where inspectors said one of the issues they found involved cockroaches.

The inspection report says a roach was found in food and in the kitchen. The restaurant has been told they must have an exterminator come in more than once a month.

Bamboo Luau’s restaurant opened on Cheshire Bridge 27 years ago. However, in the last year, it has had some rough times when it comes to inspection scores. On June 9, it got a failing score of 62. The report said the health department got a report of a roach in food served. The inspector confirmed it was valid.

It’s a big disappointment for Rob Daugherty who was planning to take his wife and daughters to the restaurant he took his wife to more than 17 years ago on their first date.

“It’s disappointing, it’s sad,” Daugherty said.

Some of the other violations observed were two roaches on the prep table in the kitchen, several dented cans of food on the shelf and a heavily soiled basket of egg rolls.

Last July, Bamboo Luau’s restaurant failed it’s inspection with a 58. At the time, they told Channel 2 Action News, it was the lowest score they ever received.

By phone, the owner told Sbarge, he has no comment. The Dougherty’s decided, based on the inspection report, not to eat at the place where they have so many fond memories of their first date.

"When you lose a favorite spot, it’s disappointing,” Dougherty said.
