GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County school officials launched an investigation into reports that students were allowed to wear KKK-type robes during a class project.
The investigation revolves around Stephanie Hunte, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Sweetwater Middle School in Lawrenceville. Gwinnett County Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach said Hunte allowed students to choose a historical period to re-enact and the students chose a KKK scene.
Another teacher saw the attire on Thursday of last week and alerted as assistant principal, who stopped the activity. Roach told Channel 2 Action News reporter Manuel Bojorquez that Hunte did not disclose that students in another one of her classes had done the same thing the day before.
The Gwinnett County School System has approved books and movies about the time period, said Roach. The class project was not part of approved curriculum and therefore inappropriate, she added.
School officials have not said what type of disciplinary action, if any, they might take. Attempts to reach Hunte were not successful.
Hunte is the second Georgia teacher is in trouble over letting students dress up in sheets simulating the Ku Klux Klan.
A Lumpkin County teacher was put on administrative leave last week after a similar incident, which drew a complaint from a parent.
