Sewage Smell Stinks Up Atlanta Neighborhood

ATLANTA — One Northwest Atlanta neighborhood has a smelly problem.

Residents of Adam's Crossing neighborhood told Channel 2 Action News reporter Jeff Dore that they have been plagued by a smell they described as, as if they were sitting in a barn yard.

"Last week when I was running, I was wondering if we had a chicken coop around somewhere cause that's pretty much what it smelled like," said area resident Michelle Burg.

The source of the smell is a nearby sewage treatment plant, the R.M. Clayton Sewage Treatment Plant.

"You definitely notice it more when it's warm outside," said resident Amit Kumar.

A city spokesman said Atlanta is rebuilding two solid waster digesters, which are giant composters which were destroyed during the September floods.

"Well, you smell it a couple a times a week. It's a little bit, ahem, on the stronger side," said Kumar.

Officials said repairs are ahead of scheduled but are not expected to be completed until July.
