As it has since 1998, the American Automobile Association will be offering free rides for impaired drivers, officials with the company said in a news release.
The Tow To Go program, which serves drivers in the Southeast and Midwest, has helped keep 25,000 impaired drivers off the roads during holiday weekends. This year's Holiday Safe Ride Program began Wednesday and will continue until 6 a.m. Friday, company officials said.
According to the AAA website, Tow to Go offers free, confidential rides to impaired drivers; one does not need to be a AAA member to get a ride. A tow truck designated by AAA will take the driver home or to a safe place, and transport the vehicle to a safe spot within 10 miles of the pickup.
Tow to Go is available in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin. In Indiana, the service is available only in Fort Wayne and South Bend.
The telephone numbers for assistance in these states are either (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.
Drivers in other selected areas will have a safe ride program available from AAA from 6 p.m. Thursday until Friday at 6 a.m. Those states include Alaska (Anchorage only), Arizona, California (in 44 counties in the northern part of the state), Nevada and Utah. There will be limited service in Montana, according to AAA.
For assistance, call (800) 222-4357 or (800-AAA-HELP).
In 13 of California's southern counties, drivers will be transported up to 7 miles for free between 6 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday. The number to call is (800) 400-4222.
Alabama, New Mexico and Texas offer up to 10 miles for free, while Hawaii offers up to 5 miles free of charge. AAA said.
