USA defeats the Netherlands to become FIFA Women's World Cup champions

Megan Rapinoe of the USA celebrates with the FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy following her team's victory in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup France Final match between The United States of America and The Netherlands.

LYON, France — The USA is once again soccer world champions after defeating the Netherlands 2-0 in the FIFA 2019 Women's World Cup final.

Sunday's victory is the second consecutive World Cup win for the United States women's soccer team, and its fourth overall.

The game started out slow -- the United States had never been scoreless in the first half in previous games, according to CBS news. However, the game came to life in the second half with goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle, ESPN reported.

Rapinoe, the team captain, had to sit out Tuesday's semifinal game against England due to a hamstring strain. However, she returned to the field Sunday and finished the World Cup with six goals, tying with teammate Alex Morgan and England’s Ellen White for most in the tournament.

Rapinoe was awarded the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards, which are awarded to the top scorer and most valuable player, respectively.  Alex Morgan won the Silver Boot.

The team will be honored Wednesday morning with a ticker tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted.
