MACON, Ga. — A boat accident early Saturday morning on a Georgia lake killed one person and left six others injured, investigators said.
Update 3:55 p.m. EDT July 24: The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said a speed boat with two passengers struck a pontoon boat that had seven people aboard, WGXA reported.
Everyone on the pontoon boat was injured. The people in the speed boat abandoned the vessel and fled the area. They were later found at a home nearby.
Investigators believe the accident was alcohol-related.
The Department of Natural Resources is investigating. Charges will be determined and filed in two or three months after the investigation is complete.
The people on the pontoon boat worked at the Fish N Pig, which was closed Saturday and likely not reopening until Wednesday because of the incident, the restaurant said.
“Please keep the victims, their families, and our Fish N Pig community in your thoughts during this time,” the restaurant said.
Original report: Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones said a boat crashed around 2 a.m. on Lake Tobesofkee, WMAZ reported.
William Childs, 20, was taken to a hospital where he died from blunt force trauma, Jones said. A woman in her 20s suffered skull fractures and was in critical condition. The condition of the five other victims is unknown.
It is unclear what led to the accident.
