According to the Mobile Police Department, the shooting occurred around 11:14 p.m. CST Saturday, a few blocks away from the 15th annual MoonPie Over Mobile event, which was attended by thousands of revelers, WALA-TV reported.

Update 12:15 p.m. EST Jan. 1: In a statement, the Mobile Police Department said that the person killed was a 24-year-old male. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, WKRG-TV reported.

Police added that the injured victims ranged in age from 17 to 57. Their injuries were described as being severe to non-life-threatening, according to the television station.

“Obviously multiple shots rang out. I can certainly tell you that,” Mobile police Chief Paul Prine told reporters. “I have one deceased individual and nine other individuals who have been shot by gunfire, who are at the local hospitals being treated. The perpetrators and at least the deceased may have been known to one another. I think that would give some comfort to all of us downtown that this was not just a random shooting where someone lost their life.”

Original report: “It was terrifying,” Carly Bragg, who was downtown for the New Year’s Eve celebration, told the television station. “It sounded like super-close fireworks. The timing of it was wild. We walked right past the area, and then it happened.”

Mobile police Chief Paul Prine told WPMI-TV that the injured victims were taken to area hospitals but did not have any information about the extent of their injuries.

Cpl. Ryan Blakely said no information was available about the person who was killed, AL.com reported. The officer added that no arrests had been made.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
