2 dead, 6 injured after mass shooting

ORLANDO — Two people are dead and six more are injured after a mass shooting overnight in downtown Orlando.

Channel 2′s sister station WFTV reports that the shooting happened during Halloween celebrations.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith held a brief news conference Friday morning where he confirmed a suspect is in custody. Police later identified him as 17-year-old Jaylen Edgar.

The shooting happened around 1:07 a.m. in the area of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue. Videos shared by police on Friday show a suspect shooting into the crowd and sending people running to safety.

Police said the gunman ran off after the shooting, and another shooting happened near Washington Street and Orange Avenue. Officers can be seen in the video immediately taking the suspect into custody.

Investigators have not released the names of the victims, but have released their ages and injuries:

  • A 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old man died after they were shot
  • A 20-year-old man had a bullet graze his head.
  • A 19-year-old woman was shot in the back, and the bullet lodged in her cheek
  • An 18-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were shot in the leg.
  • A 39-year-old woman was shot in the hand.
  • A 26-year-old man was shot in the foot.
  • A 26-year-old woman was trampled by the crowd as they were running from the shooting.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said there were more than 100 officers on patrol and they estimated between 50,000 and 100,000 were downtown celebrating Halloween on Thursday night into Friday.

Orlando police shared several videos that show the chaos during the shooting. One of the video clips also shows them taking the suspected gunman into custody.
