2 Wisconsin police officers killed during traffic stop

BARRON COUNTY, Wis. — Two police officers were killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop in Barron County, Wisconsin, on Saturday afternoon.

In a news release, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation said it was investigating a shooting in Cameron, Wisconsin, that happened just after 3:30 p.m.

The DOJ said an officer with the Chetek Police Department conducted a traffic stop. During that traffic stop, a shooting occurred. The officer, along with an officer from the Cameron Police Department, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was taken to the hospital where they later died from their injuries.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Cameron and Chetek Police Departments,” the Barron County Sheriff’s Department wrote on Facebook.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss today of two officers. I am thinking of their families and the Chetek and Cameron Police Departments at this incredibly difficult time,” Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul wrote on Facebook.

The names of the officers and the suspect have not yet been released, according to The Associated Press.

The Division of Criminal Investigation within the Wisconsin Department of Justice will be investigating the deadly shooting and will send a report to the Barron County district attorney, according to a statement obtained by the AP.
