LUMBERTON, N.C. — A 3-year-old child was shot Monday in southern North Carolina on Monday, authorities said.
According to a news release from the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Burnis Wilkins confirmed that deputies were investigating a shooting of the child outside Lumberton.
Deputies, juvenile investigators and crime scene investigators are investigating the shooting, WRAL-TV reported. The child’s condition is unknown.
The shooting occurred near Singletary Church Road and state highway 211 East, the sheriff’s office said. It was unclear what led to the shooting, or whether the child’s wounds were self-inflicted.
The sheriff’s office did not release any other details but said more information would be provided later Monday, the release stated.
It is the second time this month that a child has been shot in Robeson County, according to WBTW-TV.
On April 8, a 7-year-old died after he accidentally shot himself while holding a gun, the television station reported.
