The incident happened in Tasmania, Australia, at a school that was celebrating the end of the school year, The Associated Press reported.

Police Commissioner Darren Hine said that two boys and two girls in year 6, or about 10 to 11 years old, were killed. A fifth child died at the hospital.

Four of five children injured are listed in critical condition.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Debbie Williams said the children fell from the castle about 10 meters or about 32 feet, the AP reported.

Hine called it “one of the most serious tragedies any of us are going to experience,” The New York Times reported. “On a day when these children were meant to be celebrating the last day of primary school ... instead we’re all mourning their loss.”
