Beastly: ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ roars to $143M debut

“Jurassic World Dominion” had an earth-shaking domestic debut with $143 million from 4,676 theaters, Variety reported. Friday’s gross from the sixth installment of Universal’s dinosaur saga reached $59.6 million, while globally the film grossed $389.17 million as of Sunday evening, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Jurassic World Dominion” is a reboot of the popular film, Jurassic World.” The 2015 film opened to a monstrous $208 million and ended its theatrical run with $653 million in North America and $1.6 billion globally, Variety reported. Its sequel, 2018′s “Fallen Kingdom,” raked in $148 million and finished with $417 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide.

The trilogy has been anchored by actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

“This is an excellent opening,” David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, told the entertainment news outlet. “Reviews are weak, but that has never stopped these beasts.”

“Jurassic World Dominion” knocked “Top Gun: Maverick” from its lofty perch, dropping the sequel to the 1985 film to second overall, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Still, “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to take off among moviegoers as it approaches the $400 million mark domestically, according to the entertainment outlet.

The latest dinosaur film reunites actors Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and BD Wong for the first time since they appeared in Steven Spielberg’s first “Jurassic Park” movie in 1993, Variety reported. Spielberg is executive producer for “Jurassic World Dominion.”

“Seeing a title like ‘Jurassic’ on the big screen is exactly what summer movie season is about,” Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, told Variety.

“Jurassic World Dominion” has been panned by critics and has only a 34% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest score of any title in the “Jurassic” series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That has not stopped moviegoers.

Customers under 17 accounted for 23% of the viewers. More than 56% of the viewers are male, while 46% of moviegoers were between the ages of 18 and 34, according to PostTrak.

Higher-priced Imax tickets and premium large format screens accounted for 35% of the gross, while 3D sales accounted for 25% of ticket sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
