California wildfires: How you can help

Thousands of homes have been destroyed leaving many Californians with nothing. Others have evacuated, leaving nearly everything behind, not sure what they’ll find when they get back to their properties.

Some estimates have said that the economic cost of the fires could be more than $50 billion, The New York Times reported.

So how can you help?

The biggest reminder is to do your research before donating money, items or time.

Use Charity Navigator or GuideStar to find groups that are who they say they are.

GoFundMe has compiled a list of individual people’s fundraisers that the company has verified. It also has a list of nonprofits that are helping people in California. Those groups include GoFundMe’s Wildfire Relief Fund, World Central Kitchen, Direct Relief, Pasadena Humane and Baby2Baby among others.

The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation is looking for monetary donations to help provide emergency fire shelters, hydration backpacks and wildland brush tools, The Los Angeles Times reported. To donate, click here.

The American Red Cross is accepting donations online, on the phone (800-733-2767) or by text (send REDCROSS to 90999).

The Salvation Army Southern California Division is collecting money to help provide food, personal necessities and shelter to not only those who have had to evacuate but also the first responders, The Los Angeles Times reported. Click here to donate online.

The California Fire Foundation is collecting money online to help victims of wildfires and other California disasters.

The Canine Rescue Club is looking for temporary foster homes for dogs that have been displaced. Click here to fill out the volunteer form.

The Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighters Fund is helping firefighters who have been hurt fighting the fires or those who have lost their homes. Click here to donate.
