Colorado firefighters rescue horse that fell into pool of freezing water

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Colorado firefighters on Friday rescued a horse that escaped from its pen and fell into a pool full of snow and freezing water, authorities said.

Firefighters with the Poudre Fire Authority responded at about 6:40 p.m. MDT for a large animal rescue, KMGH reported. Firefighters worked to keep the animal calm, while other workers set up ropes to remove the horse from the icy water, the television station reported.

Rescuers were able to keep the horse’s head above water, and successfully removed the animal by 7:20 p.m. MDT, KDVR reported.

Firefighters, police officers and paramedics worked to warm the horse, while a Colorado State University veterinarian tended to the animal, KMGH reported.

The horse was stabilized and taken to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for additional care, the television station reported.
