Former Texas A&M basketball star David Edwards died Monday from complications caused by the coronavirus, university officials told The Dallas Morning News.

Charles Henderson, who was a teammate of Edwards at Texas A&M, shared the news in a Facebook post Monday night.
“This coronavirus has hit me in the heart," Henderson wrote.

Edwards, a native New Yorker, averaging 13.5 points and 7.1 assists and 2.7 steals in 85 games at Texas A&M. He led the Southwest Conference with 265 assist in 1993-1994, which is still the school’s single-season record, the Morning News reported. Edwards led the Aggies to the NIT that season as Texas A&M finished 19-11 and second in the conference.

“Never in a million years would I have even imagined my backcourt teammate would go before his time,” Henderson wrote on Facebook. “For those that have been praying for him, he is now in a better place.”

Tulsa basketball coach Frank Haith, who was an assistant at Texas A&M from 1992 to 1995, tweeted Tuesday that Edwards died in New York City.
