By Saturday afternoon, U.S. COVID-19 cases totaled 49,013,784, and the nationwide death toll neared 788,000. The figures include more than 163,000 new cases and nearly 1,800 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

Meanwhile, global cases have eclipsed 265 million, resulting in more than 5.2 million virus-related fatalities.

India has recorded the second-highest cumulative nationwide cases with more than 34.6 million, but Germany has confirmed nearly 1.4 million new cases within the past 28 days, trailing only the United States and followed closely by the United Kingdom with nearly 1.2 million new cases confirmed during the same four-week period.

By contrast, Brazil has confirmed barely 22 million cumulative cases, but its 615,400 virus-related deaths trail only the United States.

The latest figures mean that the most recent 1 million U.S. cases were reported within the past 10 days. During its winter peak, the U.S. averaged 1 million new cases every four days, according to Johns Hopkins data.

California remains the hardest-hit U.S. state - with more than 5.1 million cumulative infections recorded to date - followed by Texas with more than 4.3 million cases, Florida with more than 3.7 million cases and New York with nearly 2.8 million cases.

The following 10 other states have confirmed at least 1 million cases:

  • Illinois: More than 1.8 million cases, resulting in nearly 29,000 deaths.
  • Pennsylvania: Nearly 1.8 million cases, resulting in nearly 34,000 deaths.
  • Ohio: More than 1.7 million cases, resulting in nearly 27,000 deaths.
  • Georgia: Nearly 1.7 million cases, resulting in nearly 31,000 deaths.
  • North Carolina: More than 1.5 million cases, resulting in nearly 19,000 deaths.
  • Michigan: More than 1.5 million cases, resulting in more than 25,000 deaths.
  • Tennessee: More than 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 17,000 deaths.
  • Arizona: Nearly 1.3 million cases, resulting in more than 22,000 deaths.
  • New Jersey: Nearly 1.23 million cases, resulting in more than 28,000 deaths.
  • Indiana: More than 1.1 million cases, resulting in more than 18,000 deaths.

Seventeen other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Wisconsin, Virginia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, South Carolina, Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, Washington, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Maryland, Arkansas, Iowa and Mississippi. Meanwhile, another eight states have reported fewer than half a million cases but more than 298,000 cases, including Kansas, Nevada, Connecticut, Oregon, New Mexico, Nebraska, Idaho and West Virginia.
