Fans of “The Walking Dead,” take heart.
AMC might be killing its zombie apocalypse series after 11 seasons, but two spinoffs in the works could certainly help die-hard fans cope with the loss.
Showrunners announced Wednesday that the long-running series will end in 2022, but 31 episodes – including the COVID-19-delayed Oct. 4 Season 10 finale – will air in the interim, Entertainment Weekly reported.
According to the entertainment news site, six Season 10 bonus episodes are slated to run in early 2021, followed by the first 12 episodes of Season 11 before the close of next year. The final 12 episodes will air in 2022.
An untitled spinoff, focused on Norman Reedus' character, Daryl Dixon, and Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier, will premiere the following year, and an episodic anthology “Tales of the Walking Dead” is in development by AMC and the show’s chief content officer, Scott M. Gimple, People reported.
“It’s been ten years ‘gone bye;’ what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that,” Gimple said in a statement. “What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead -- brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. ‘The Walking Dead’ lives.”
