One hand sanitizer is not necessarily like another and the Food and Drug Administration is saying some are downright dangerous.
The FDA has expanded the list of potentially dangerous hand sanitizers to 87.
The reason is that the products contain methanol which is a dangerous form of alcohol that can be absorbed through the skin and poison users, CNN reported.
“Methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death,” the FDA warned, according to CNN.
It can be found in antifreeze and fuel, Fox Business reported.
The FDA said the solvents contained between 1% and 80% of methanol contamination but the ingredient is usually not listed on the product label.
The first reports of the contaminated hand sanitizers came in June, The New York Times reported last month.
A majority of the sanitizers were made in Mexico.

The FDA has sent a warning letter to Eskbiochem S.A. de C.V. about its alleged improper manufacturing practices as well as claims that the product has been approved by the FDA, which it hasn’t, CNN reported.
The FDA is working with retailers to recall the products that could still be on store shelves, The Associated Press reported.
