Former postal employee pleads guilty to stealing money, gift cards through mail

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A former postal employee in New York pleaded guilty to stealing money and gift cards through the mail, prosecutors said Friday.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York, Shalika Williams, 30, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty to the charge of an officer or employee of the United States converting property of another, less than $1,000.

Prosecutors said that between September and Nov. 4, 2022, Williams worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the Buffalo Processing and Distribution Center, WROC-TV reported.

Prosecutors said Williams opened sealed pieces of mail and stole approximately 10 to 15 gift cards valued at $360, along with $300 in cash, the news release stated.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine, WIVB-TV reported.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 21, according to the news release.
