JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After engineering the third-greatest playoff comeback in NFL history, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence celebrated with a late meal at a Waffle House on Saturday night.
Lawrence, 23, looked awful in the first half against the Chargers, throwing four interceptions in the first half as Los Angeles took a 27-0 lead late in the first half. But the Jaguars’ first-round draft pick out of Clemson in the 2021 draft (and No. 1 overall) threw four touchdowns after that, rallying Jacksonville to a wild 31-30 victory in the AFC wild-card game.
Lawrence savored his first NFL playoff victory by stopping at a Waffle House in Jacksonville, WJAX-TV reported.
But before chowing down, Lawrence tweeted a favorite internet meme that captured the Jaguars’ improbable victory.
Without a doubt, the Chargers had Jacksonville in the first half. But the second half belonged to Lawrence and the Jaguars, who pulled off the largest comeback in franchise history.
The only bigger postseason comebacks in NFL were the Buffalo Bills’ 32-point comeback against the Houston Oilers in 1992 and the 28-point rally by the Indianapolis Colts against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, according to ESPN.
“You couldn’t write a crazier script,” Lawrence told reporters after the game. “We said in the locker room that’s kind of how our season’s going. We’re never out of the fight.
“I’m kind of speechless, honestly, just to see what belief can do and to see when a team believes in each other what you can accomplish.”
So were patrons at the Waffle House, who quickly recovered and broke into cheers when Lawrence entered the building.
While at the restaurant, Lawrence’s wife, Marissa, also filmed the scene, CBS Sports reported. While it was unclear if the quarterback had any waffles, he did sip from a cup of coffee while he mingled with fans.
Like his coffee, Lawrence was hot after his miserable start.
He went 23-for-29 for 253 yards and four touchdowns in the final 32 minutes of the game, ESPN reported. He also did not throw an interception.
Jacksonville scored touchdowns on four straight possessions and Lawrence led the Jaguars to a game-winning field goal as time expired.
Not a bad finish. And the coffee tastes much sweeter after a win like that.
