It’s been a quarter-century since JonBenet Ramsey was found bludgeoned and strangled to death in her family’s basement, but over the 25 years since she was killed, no one has answered for her death.

But an online petition is circulating asking Colorado’s governor to allow an outside agency to test DNA that has never been examined, The Associated Press reported.

JonBenet was 6 years old when she was found in the basement of her home on Dec. 26, 1996. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, had reported the child missing and that a ransom note had been left behind. Hours later, JonBenet’s body was found.

While her death was ruled a homicide, no one was prosecuted for killing her.

John Ramsey now wants DNA evidence that Boulder police collected to be given to another agency so it can be tested.

“Somehow we’ve got to force the police, or take it away from them, the ability to go ahead and test some of the crime scene evidence that was never tested for DNA,” John Ramsey told KUSA. “Why that’s never been done and will never be done by the police baffles me.”

The petition says that new technology has led to cold cases being solved and that the Boulder Police Department is not doing enough to solve the case. The police department said on the 25th anniversary of her death, that it was “actively reviewing genetic DNA testing processes” to see if they could be used, the AP reported.

The Boulder Police Department says it has been working with state and federal law enforcement, and that it is regularly checked for new matches. As of last year, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said it had updated 750 DNA samples connected with the case.
