Mesa police said Eric Van Tine, 38, walked up to the gas station clerk with a large butcher knife as he was changing the trash can bags, KPHO reported.

Tine ran toward the clerk as if he were going to stab him and yelled, “I told you I would be back to kill you.”

The clerk ran to the other side of a vehicle and Tine turned and ran off.

Surveillance video shows Tine pull the large knife from his waistband before running toward the clerk.

Officers arrived, searched the area and found Tine nearby.

Tine told officers that he was upset with the clerk who had previously accused him of shoplifting, KPHO reported. Tine refused to tell officers where the knife was. He told them he wanted to go back to jail and eat a bologna sandwich.

Tine was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held on $25,000 bond.
