WHITE LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan woman’s act of honesty helped save a newlywed couple’s cache of wedding cash, as she returned nearly $15,000 she found in a bag outside a gas station while walking to work last month.

Dianne Gordon, of White Lake Township, was walking to her job at Value Center Fresh Market on Jan. 21 when she decided to stop at a BP gas station for a snack, WJBK-TV reported.

That is when she noticed something unusual.

“I looked down on the ground and found a plastic bag with a large sum of money in it,” Gordon told the television station. “When you turned it over there was even more money.”

Gordon, whose LinkedIn profile lists her as semi-retired, had been without transportation since her car broke down a year ago. That money would have come in handy, but Gordon said she knew what to do.

“This doesn’t belong to me, I need to call a police officer,” Gordon told WJBK.

Lt. Matthew Ivory of the White Lake Township Police Department said that in addition to the cash, there were wedding cards inside the bag.

“It never really crossed her mind to do anything other than turn it over,” Ivory told the television station. “These were gifts from a wedding that occurred that day.

“I think it was $14,780 worth of cash.”

The money was returned to a young couple who had gotten married that day, Ivory said.

Gordon said she had no regrets.

“It could have made my life a whole lot easier but it’s OK. It didn’t belong to me,” Gordon told WJBK.

Ivory said that the wife of one of his fellow officers set up a GoFundMe page to help Gordon buy a new car, because “the world could probably use a few more Diannes.”

The page, created on Tuesday, has already had more than $26,000 pledged to help Gordon.

“I’m floored,” Gordon told WJBK. “I mean, I didn’t do anything special.

“You find something that doesn’t belong to you, don’t keep it.”
