Microsoft to open Atlanta office, create 1,500 new jobs

Technology company Microsoft Corp. has announced plans to open a new workspace in Atlanta, Georgia.

The company will expand operations in the city’s midtown area in a 523,000 square-foot facility in the popular Atlantic Station district. The facility, which will include a retail area, is slated to open in the summer of 2021.

The investment will cost $75 million.

Approximately 1,500 new jobs will be created, with most of them focused on developing the company’s initiatives with artificial intelligence and cloud services. According to a press release, a variety of positions will be available across multiple skill sets.

“We are excited that a global leader like Microsoft Corp. is expanding its investment in Georgia with tech jobs that will be truly beneficial to the company and our state,” Gov. Brian Kemp said. “I am confident that our top-notch tech talent and education pipeline will continue to be an asset to Microsoft. We are laser-focused on providing high-quality jobs for hardworking Georgians, and I thank Microsoft for our growing partnership.”

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said the move reaffirms Atlanta is a city that is developing as a global leader for the software development industry.

Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, echoed that thought.

“Microsoft’s continued expansion and growth in metro Atlanta are testaments to our region’s reputation as a hub for innovation-based companies,” she said. “Microsoft is sure to find ongoing success here, with our business-friendly climate and unmatched culture attracting the high-tech talent companies like Microsoft need.”

Georgia is already home to the headquarters of high-profile companies like Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines and Home Depot.

Microsoft, which owns LinkedIn, Xbox and GitHub, is headquartered in Redmond, Washington.
