MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee woman has been charged in the shooting death of her 2-year-old daughter on Tuesday, authorities said.
Jasmine C. Daniels, 22, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the death of Zymeiia Stevens, according to a criminal complaint.
A criminal complaint filed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office alleges that Daniels gave conflicting statements to investigators, but later admitted she “accidentally did it” while “playing around with her gun” in the basement of her home, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
An autopsy revealed that Stevens suffered four gunshot wounds caused by a single bullet, the newspaper reported. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide.
During an interview at the hospital Tuesday night, Daniels told police her children -- Stevens and a 3-year-old boy -- were in her basement apartment, WITI reported. Daniels said she then heard “three to four” gunshots and heard her daughter screaming, the television station reported.
According to police, Daniels later changed her story and said her son accidentally shot his sister, WJDT reported.
During additional questioning Wednesday, Daniels said she had found the gun at a park a week before the shooting and said she did not check to see if it was loaded, WITI reported. After another interview, in which Daniels gave another conflicting report, police said she confessed to the shooting, the television station reported.
Daniels is scheduled to make an initial appearance in court on Aug. 2, the Journal Sentinel reported.
