GREENVILLE, Miss. — A Mississippi police officer has died and multiple other people are recovering from injuries following a shootout in Greenville, authorities said.
Update 3:55 p.m. EDT Oct. 12: Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell identified the slain officer as Greenville Police Department Detective Myiesha Stewart, the Clarion Ledger reported.

Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons remembered Stewart as someone “who exhibited heart and courage.” He said she had recently graduated from the police academy and quickly ascended the ranks, becoming an investigator.
“She was one who put fear aside to help someone else, and in her final act she leaves a legacy of duty, honor, strength, courage and service,” he said. “To know Investigator Stewart was to respect her, respect her work, but to love her as a person.
Stewart is survived by her 3-year-old son and her parents, Simmons said.
Original report: According to WLBT, the incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday near state Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 82.
“Several people were injured by gunshots, including an investigator with the Greenville Police Department, who has unfortunately passed away as a result of the incident,” Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons said in a statement shared on the city’s Facebook page.
In addition, the suspect shot a female in the foot and a male in the head, WLBT reported, citing law enforcement sources. Crews flew the male victim and the suspect, who also was wounded, to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to the news outlet.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case, WAPT reported.
No further information, including the identity of the slain officer, was immediately available.
