NEW YORK — A New York mother is behind bars after authorities said she threw a newborn baby out a window of her Queens home, critically injuring the child.
According to WABC-TV, Sabita Dookram, 23, is now facing several charges, including attempted murder and attempted manslaughter, after a neighbor found the hours-old infant crying near 126th Street shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday. Emergency crews rushed the baby boy to a nearby hospital, where he was being treated for brain bleeding and swelling, as well as an injury to his abdomen that caused internal bleeding, WPIX-TV reported.
Police identified the child’s mother as Dookram, who said she delivered the baby Saturday afternoon, according to WPIX.
“I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window,” she told investigators, the news outlet reported, citing court documents.
She added that she didn’t check on the child afterward and instead put her clothes in the laundry hamper, took a shower and went to sleep, the documents said.
