Officer accidentally shot with stun gun unintentionally shot suspect, officials say

RENO, Nev. — A Reno officer accidentally shot with a stun gun unintentionally discharged his firearm, hitting a suspect in the shoulder, officials said.

The incident occurred when a man was pulled over for traffic violations July 26, KOLO reported.

When Reno police arrived at the scene, Washoe County Sheriff’s deputies already had their stun guns drawn on the suspect who was not complying with their orders, KOLO reported.

A video shows the man stepping forward and placing his personal items on the ground. He then tries to pull out his wallet. That’s when a deputy fired a stun gun. The prong misses the suspect but hits a police officer who unintentionally fires his gun striking the victim in the shoulder. The victim turns to walk away before falling to the ground. He complains about his shoulder as he is handcuffed. The officer who shot him applied a tourniquet before the man was taken to the hospital where he recovered from his injuries.

He was cited for reckless driving and obstructing an officer, KOLO reported.
