SPRINGDALE, Ohio — An Ohio police officer was killed and another was injured Saturday night when a vehicle involved in a traffic pursuit crashed into their cruiser, authorities said.
Kaia Grant, 33, of the Springdale Police Department, is the department’s first fatality in the line of duty, Springdale, Mayor Doyle Webster said during a news conference. Also injured in the crash was Springdale Sgt. Andrew Davis, WXIX reported. He was treated and released, WLWT reported.
Grant, of Wyoming, Ohio, was an eight-year veteran of the force, WCPO reported. She was a 2005 graduate of Wyoming High School, the television station reported.
According to police, the chase began around 8:30 p.m. when officers from another agency began pursuing a vehicle that was heading west on Interstate 275, WLWT reported. At least 30 cars were involved in the chase, the television station reported.
Police said the cruiser was then hit by the driver who was being chased, according to WLWT.
“This is a deep tragedy for our city and our police officers and for Kaia’s family, and I ask you keep us in your thoughts and prayers,” Springdale Police Chief Thomas Wells said at a news briefing.
