AMARILLO, Texas — A man is behind bars and facing charges after police said he shot a young boy in the head in a road rage incident.
Officers with the Amarillo Police Department said in a news release that they drove up to what appeared to be an accident just as it occurred. When officers approached, the driver of one truck involved got out and said that his son had been shot by the driver of the other truck.
The child, identified as Nicco Frausto, 8, was rushed to the hospital and was released Sunday after having surgery, KVII reported.
Nicco’s father, Eric, told KVII that he and his son had watched a baseball game and were heading home after watching fireworks when the other truck ran a red light and almost hit them. Fausto honked, and then Fausto told KVII that the other truck slowed down and fired shots at his truck, “hitting my son in the head.” When the suspect tried to drive away, Fausto told KVII that he “sped up and wrecked into him.”
Witnesses on the scene told police that the violence was the result of road rage, KAMR reported.
Police arrested Frankie Lee Haigood after taking him to the hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash, officers said in a news release.
A GoFundMe created for Nicco had raised more than $5,000 after two days.
Haigood was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and released from jail on a $25,000 bond, KVII reported.
