Retailer Target has announced a recall of weighted children’s blankets after a report of two children killed while using them.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of approximately 204,000 Pillowfort Weighted Blankets at Target. The blankets are being recalled because a child can become trapped when they unzip and enter the blanket, creating a risk of asphyxiation.
The CPSC said two girls, 4 and 6 years old, became entrapped in the cover of one of the blankets and died due to asphyxia at Camp Lejeune in April 2022. Target has received an additional two reports of children becoming trapped in the blankets.
Customers who have the blankets are urged to stop using them immediately and to contact Target for a refund.
The recalled Pillowfort Weighted Blankets weigh 6 pounds, measure 60 inches long by 40 inches wide and have a removable, waterproof, washable cover. The blankets were sold in eight prints and colors, including unicorn white, space navy, buffalo plaid and blue constellation.
The blankets were sold from December 2018 to September 2022 for $40.
For a refund, contact Target at 800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT for a prepaid return label to return the blankets via mail, or simply return the items to any Target store. For more information, visit Target’s website.
