Sanctioned senior prank at Texas high school causes ‘thousands of dollars’ in damages

FRISCO, Texas — What began as a prank now has become a sticky situation for seniors at a north Texas high school.

Classes at Memorial High School in Frisco were canceled for the last two days of the school year after a senior prank approved by school officials caused “thousands of dollars” in damage on Wednesday night, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Officials with the Frisco Independent School District said the original plan involved a small group of students and a large number of sticky notes, KFDW-TV reported.

The students were allowed to post the notes around campus, but it “devolved rapidly” despite the presence of staff members, the Morning News reported.

The damage and poor air quality in its aftermath prompted the school to cancel classes on Thursday and Friday, Frisco ISD officials said.

According to a letter from the district to students, parents and staff obtained by several news organizations, the school district is working with the Frisco Police Department to investigate the students involved.

According to the Morning News, the vandalism caused by the students “includes paint on the walls, destruction of furniture, discharged fire extinguishers throughout campus and more,” the letter said.

“Students vandalized the campus to a point that classes are not able to be held at MHS for the remainder of the week,” school administrators wrote in the letter, according to KFDW.

Video of the vandalism was posted to TikTok, WFAA-TV reported.

“There were not specific instructions or parameters for the messages,” Meghan Cone, assistant communications director for the Frisco ISD, told USA Today. “However, they did need to be school appropriate.”

Cone told the newspaper that every surface of the 300,000-square-foot campus needs to be cleaned, including the walls, ceilings and floors.

“I want to make it clear that campus and District staff are working with police to identify all individuals involved in the vandalism,” administration officials said in the email. “Disciplinary measures will be enforced and Frisco ISD intends to prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.”

No charges have been determined at this time.

“Given the scope of the incident at Memorial, it is still under investigation,” a spokesperson for the Frisco Police Department told WFAA. “I know that discussions are being had with FISD officials to determine the best course of action to take. Any questions regarding school closures would need to be directed to them.”
