SHREVEPORT, La. — A Louisiana police officer was arrested on Thursday after the fatal shooting of Shreveport resident Alonzo Bagley earlier this month, Louisiana State Police said.
Shreveport police Officer Alexander Tyler, 23, was charged with negligent homicide in the death of Bagley, 43, on Feb. 3, the Shreveport Times reported. According to the state police, Tyler was booked into the Caddo Correctional Center.
State police released body camera footage on Thursday of the incident at the Villa Norte Apartments. According to an affidavit, the incident occurred at 10:51 p.m. CST on Feb. 3, NBC News reported.
Bagley, an unarmed Black man was allegedly shot by Tyler, who can be seen on the video performing aid after the incident, the Times reported.
Tyler can be heard on the video saying, “No man, no man, come on dude,” as he rendered aid, according to the newspaper.
The “critical incident community briefing video” was created by state police and contains graphic pictures and language.
According to Shreveport police, Tyler and another officer responded to a call for what was described as a domestic disturbance, the Times reported.
After police made contact with Bagley, he allegedly jumped from a rear balcony and fled the scene on foot, state police Superintendent Col. Lamar Davis said at a news conference earlier this month.
Police said Tyler fired one shot when Bagley rounded the corner of the building, striking the victim in the chest, the Times reported. Bagley was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 11:30 p.m. CST.
J. Dhu Thompson, Tyler’s attorney, told KSLA-TV earlier Thursday that he had hoped no charges would be filed in the case.
“These are split-second decisions that officers have to make. You know, if charges are brought we’ll be prepared to defend them,” Thompson told the television station. “You and I have the benefit of hindsight, we can sit down in a comfortable room with a cup of coffee and review this video. That’s not the position that Officer Tyler was in, or any other officer that puts his life on the line on a day-to-day basis and encounters these type of situations.”
“Alonzo was just so, so scared,” Ron Haley, who is representing the family, told the Times. “Everyone at the scene, including the perpetrator Alexander Tyler, knew Mr. Bagley should not have been shot that night.”
Bagley’s brother, Xavier Sudds, told CNN that Bagley’s “hands were up” at the time of the shooting after viewing the video for the first time.
“A short flight takes place but flight is not a death sentence,” Haley told reporters, according to CNN. “Flight does not mean shoot to kill. Flight does not mean judge, jury and executioner and that’s what happened here.”
Tyler was placed on administrative leave after the shooting, NBC News reported. He was hired by the Shreveport Police Department in May 2021.
After a bond hearing, the judge set Tyler’s bail at $25,000, KSLA reported. He posted bail at 3:30 p.m. CST, according to the television station.
Tyler is scheduled to appear in court on April 3, according to the television station.
