Singer, reality TV star Traci Braxton dead at 50 after cancer battle

Traci Braxton, a singer and reality television star and the sister of Toni Braxton, died Friday after a battle with cancer. She was 50.

According to her family, Braxton had cancer of the esophagus, NBC News reported.

“We have come to a time where we must inform the public that after a year of privately undergoing a series of treatment for esophageal cancer our beloved Traci Braxton has gone on to glory,” her husband of 29 years, Kevin Surratt, said in a statement.

Traci Braxton spent her last year in hospice, her publicist, Thomasina Perkins-Washington, told NBC News.

“It is with the utmost regret that we inform you of the passing of our sister, Traci,” Toni Braxton wrote in an Instagram post. “Needless to say, she was a bright light, a wonderful daughter, an amazing sister, a loving mother, wife, grandmother and a respected performer. We will miss her dearly.”

Traci Braxton appeared on her family’s reality show, Braxton Family Values, according to IMDb.com. She appeared in 147 episodes of the show from 2011 to 2020, the website reported. She also joined her husband in eight episodes of the reality show, “Marriage Boot Camp,” in 2014, according to IMDb.com.

Traci Braxton was born on April 2, 1971, in Severn, Maryland. She released a solo album, “Crash & Burn,” in October 2014, according to People. It was released after her single, “Last Call.”

She released another single, “Perfect Time” in 2015, the magazine reported. Her second studio album, “On Earth,” was released in 2018, People reported. The album featured the single “Broken Things,” which included vocals from her sisters, Toni, Towanda and Trina, according to the magazine.

As an actress, Traci Braxton appeared in the films Sinners Wanted (2018), There’s a Stranger in My House (Stageplay) (2017) and Chaaw (2022).

“When I heard the news about my mother being sick, first thing she said was I’m going to fight and beat this,” her son, Kevin Surratt Jr., said in an Instagram post on Saturday. “She fought to the end and today she’s at peace.”
